"Each second we live is a new and unique moment of the universe, a moment that will never be again. And what do we teach our children? We teach them that two and two make four, and that Paris is the capital of France. When will we also teach them what they are? We should say to each of them: Do you know what you are? You are a marvel. You are unique. In all the years that have passed, there has never been another child like you. Your legs, your arms, your clever fingers, the way you move. You may become a Shakespeare, a Michelangelo, a Beethoven. You have the capacity for anything. Yes, you are a marvel. And when you grow up, can you then harm another who is, like you, a marvel? You must work, we must all work, to make the world worthy of its children."

I'm Not Really a Waitress
Posted by: Samantha on Thursday, August 03, 2006 - 12:00 AM
Politics I'll bet the last thing you thought this journal entry would be about was Mel Gibson, right? Think again...

While I feel for the guy and the predicament he finds himself in, it's difficult for me to feel too much sympathy because of my experience with him.

Years and years ago, I was a waitress in Malibu. Although the atmosphere of the restaurant was that of a casual beach cafe, the clientele was mainly celebrities. I waited on Barbra Streisand, Jay Leno, John Cusack, Sandra Bullock, Matthew McConaughey, Rod Steiger, Pam Anderson and Tommy Lee, David Duchovny and Tea Leone, and many others. On a weekly basis, I waited on Mel Gibson.

Repeatedly Mel would bring his family of 10,000 in to dine and his kids would proceed to throw shit everywhere and demand this and that. Mel himself is friendly and not overly arrogant. The deal is though, he is CHEAP! He's the worst tipper and the running joke among the staff was we know why he didn't pay the Ransom (the film's release coincided with my time at the restaurant).

My frustration towards Mel and other celebrities who are completely oblivious to the fact that waitresses matter, led me to write a little song called "I'm Not Really a Waitress." The song will appear on my next CD, but I thought I'd post the lyrics here for your amusement.

(PS for those of you who've asked, please leave comments on my Myspace Blog. This site isn't set up to receive them).

I'm Not Really a Waitress
Words & Music by Samantha Murphy

Every day when I wake up I wanna be sick
'cause I work in a restaurant that's paying me dick
getting treated as dumb as a brick

I'm a human being too
Last time I checked it was true

Just because I'm the one who's bringing the food
Doesn't give you the right to be bossy and rude
You're the reason I'm in this mood

You think You're better than me
Looks, they can sometimes deceive

I'm not really a waitress
I'm a movie star
A rock and roller, a fancy car
and I hate this
anonymity
it's killing me that you don't see
Call me desperate or dateless
but, I'm not really a waitress

no, no, no, no

Where's my lunch, bring the check, hurry up I'll be late
Go to hell, kiss my ass, here's a fist for your face
by the way, there's a roach on your plate

I know you asked for decaf
but, you got caffeine now I laugh

I'm not really a waitress
I'm a movie star
A rock and roller, a fancy car
and I hate this
anonymity
it's killing me that you don't see
Call me desperate or dateless
but, I'm not really a waitress

no, no, no, no

You'll be the ones getting screwed
You'll be the ones getting screwed
Mel Gibson, John Cusack too
You'll be the ones getting screwed

You treated me like a waitress
I'm a movie star, a rock and roller
I own this bar and I hate this
anonymity
it's killing me that you don't see
Say I'm desperate or dateless
mediocre or faceless
but, I'm not really a waitress
I'm not really a waitress
I'm not really a waitress

no, no, no, no
